Superhero Chefs Restaurants in Alabama
If cooking is your kryptonite, then you need to make your way to Superhero Chefs where the food is out of this world! Superhero Chefs is a family-friendly restaurant that serves up delicious dishes with a superhero twist. There are two locations in Alabama: Huntsville and Tuscumbia.
The Huntsville Location
The Huntsville location opened spring of 2022 at 903 Old Monrovia Road and is open for breakfast and lunch.
Built around the most important meal of the day, Superhero Chefs serves up a variety of superhero-themed breakfast dishes. Let’s take a look at what’s on the breakfast menu at Superhero Chefs, shall we?
For starters, there are Breakfast Appetizers which include Waffle Bites (bite-size waffles tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with strawberry compote and cream cheese whipped cream), Pancake Waffle Tacos (made with eggs, candy’d bacon, sausage, maple heat, and powdered sugar), and French Toast Sticks (encrusted with granola and served with apple compote, drizzled with caramel, and topped with powdered sugar).
There are three omelets on the menu: Superchef (with bacon, spinach, red peppers, caramelized onions, sausage, and cheese), Extreme Veggie (with spinach, red peppers, onions, and stuffed with zucchini, squash, and cheese), and Salmon.
If you love waffles, you’re in luck! There are 8 waffles on the menu: the Super Waffle, Wings & Waffle, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Waffle, The Hulk (it’s a green waffle sandwich!), The Juggernaut, and a Gluten Free Waffle.
The 2″ thick pancakes come in stacks of three in five delicious options: regular, Sub Zero (blueberry with lemon mascarpone sauce), Red Velvet, Reese Cup, and Super Scriddle.
And if all of that was not enough, there are specialty items as well as vegan options. If you are feeling famished, the Superchef Breakfast Platter is bound to crush your hunger pangs with 3 eggs, hash browns, toast, and your choice of either candy’d bacon or sausage. Other tasty options include Super Avocado Toast, Eggs Benedict, and Chef’s Steak and Eggs.
On the lunch menu, there are two appetizers on the menu: Southern Egg Rolls and Bang Bang Cauliflower (my fave!).
In line with the superhero theme, the sandwich options are divided into superheroes and villains. All of the Superhero sandwiches are served on brioche buns and come with a choice of fries or Brussels sprouts. What makes the sandwiches special are their unique flavor profiles which are:
- Batman – fried cauliflower with garlic aioli and sweet & spicy pickles,
- Superman fried cauliflower tossed in Superhero’s signature sauce and served with Cajun mayo and topped with brown sugar slaw,
- Wolverine – plant-based burger with sweet onion jam, smoked vegan cheese, sweet habanero pickles and veggie sausage,
- Thor – a plant-based burger topped with veggie sausage, caramelized onion, guacamole, and pepper relish, and
- Plain Jane Vegan Burger.
The villains are a carnivore’s delight. Just like their superhero counterpart, they are served on brioche buns and come with a choice of a side.
- Joker – fried chicken served on a bun with garlic aioli and sweet & spicy pickles,
- Lex Luthor – fried chicken tossed in Superhero’s signature sauce and served with Cajun mayo and topped with brown sugar slaw,
- Sabretooth – a beef short-rib burger with sweet onion jam, smoked vegan cheese, sweet habanero pickles and candy’d bacon,
- Loki – a beef short-rib burger with candy’d bacon, caramelized onions, avocado slices, and pepper relish, and
- Plain Jane – a short rib beef burger with cheese.
For those seeking lighter fare, there are the Wonder Woman salad with mixed greens, egg, marinated tomatoes, candy’d bacon, feta cheese, avocado, and honey mustard ranch dressing, and the Iron Man salad with mixed greens, roasted red peppers, onions, Parmesan, charred lemon, Caesar dressing, croutons, and garlic parm egg.
One feature worth noting about the Huntsville location is the Hero Club Membership. Diners who have a monthly subscription have access to $2 classic mimosas or $4 flavored mimosas at the Huntsville location (unlimited $1 classic mimosas during the first month of membership), discounts on merchandise, invitations to private parties, and 50% off a select menu item when dining in on Thanos Tuesdays.
Superhero Chefs in Tuscumbia
We can thank Larry Lewis, the CEO of BizTech, Huntsville’s oldest business incubator, for helping bring the first location of Superhero Chefs in Alabama to Tuscumbia. While Lewis was not interested in starting a restaurant “because restaurants don’t make money,” he changed his mind after meeting the chef and sampling some of his dishes.
Originally, the first location was to be in Huntsville, but as a Tuscumbia resident, Lewis knew that Superhero Chefs would stand out in The Shoals. Chef Ferguson did a tasting for area leaders and toured the area and liked what he saw.
In April 2019, Larry Lewis bought a building on South Main Street, and by summer the restaurant was up and running. Hungry diners can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Tuscumbia location.
Superhero Chef’s lunch/dinner menu has more than just sandwiches. They, too, have salads that will satisfy you without weighing you down. Their version of the Iron Man salad has mixed greens, strawberries, quinoa, 5-minute egg, roasted carrots, red onions, candy’d pecans, and feta and is served with balsamic vinaigrette.
The Tuscumbia location also serves the Flash salad (romaine, Parmesan cheese, roasted asparagus, roasted red peppers, pine nuts, and Caesar dressing) and the Superman salad made with mixed greens, grilled peaches, white raisins, pecans, feta, red onion, and served with balsamic vinaigrette.
The burgers at the Tuscumbia location pay homage to the state’s largest football rivals – The University of Alabama and Auburn University. The War Eagle Burger is an 8-ounce marinated beef patty served with sweet onion jam, smoked gouda cheese, sweet habanero pickles, and candy’d bacon. The Roll Tide Burger is topped with hot crab spread and pulled pork with a sweet and sour glaze.
There are a few more sandwiches on the Tuscumbia menu: Southern Stack Burger, Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the G.O.A.T. Grilled Cheese. Along with those, there are three quesadillas that may have you rethinking your lunch game: Wolverine Quesadilla (with garlic sauteed shrimp, cheese, and spinach with alfredo sauce), Aqua Man Quesadilla (smoked salmon, hot crab spread, cheese, spinach, and a mango chutney sauce), and Spiderman Quesadilla (pulled pork, caramelized onions, cheese, and mango BBQ sauce).
There are additional sides on the menu: hash browns, fruit cups, house-made sausage, veggie sausage, cheese grits, candy’d bacon, candy’d turkey bacon, toast, avocado slices, and spring mix with dressing.
Chef Darnell Ferguson
With over 20 years in the culinary industry, Chef Darnell Ferguson is the mastermind behind Superhero Chefs.
Although Chef Darnell earned a degree from Sullivan University in Kentucky in Culinary Arts, his path was not always straight and narrow. A wrong turn on his journey left him homeless. Determined not to be a statistic, he realigned his focus and became serious about his talent and passion – cooking.
Chef Darnell’s hard work and talent did not go unnoticed. In 2008, he was hand-picked to cook for the US Olympic team in Beijing for the Summer Olympics. He’s been on several television shows, including Tournament of Champions, TODAY, LIVE with Kelly and Ryan, Worst Cooks in America (Season 25 – he was a co-host, not a contestant), Food Network‘s Chopped, Supermarket Statekout, Tiny Food Fight, Beat Bobby Flay, and Guy’s Grocery Games, to name a few.
We are grateful that Chef Darnell has brought a little bit of superhero flavor to Alabama. Whether you’re in Tuscumbia or Huntsville, you won’t want to miss out on the delicious food and fun atmosphere at Superhero Chefs.
