Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a beautiful city, full of charm and history, that has witnessed a lot of changes over the past 200 years.  The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel, built in 1906, has been around to witness much of it and has likewise gone through several changes.

The Renaissance has served as an office building, a World War II Veterans Hospital, and a nightclub.  Today it is one of Marriott's upscale hotels with 291 rooms and 4 suites within its 14 floors.

Interesting Facts About Renaissance Pittsburgh

  • The courtyard copper restoration is the largest copper restoration project on the East Coast since the Statute of Liberty was restored in 1986.  Baking soda was used to clean it - in fact, it took 40,000 pounds to clean the copper cladding!
  • Speaking of the Statue of Liberty - the granite on the exterior of the first three floors of the Renaissance was quarried from the same quarry that provided the granite for the base of the Statue of Liberty.
  • Pittsburgh was the United States' hub for the steel industry.  Blackout curtains and devices were put into place during World War II - the Fulton Building (the Renaissance Hotel in its earlier days) rotunda dome was covered in a heavy rubber material to block out light. It was in place for almost 60 years until it was removed during renovation.
  • Two mythical dragons made of cast aluminum are on the marquee.
