The Renaissance has served as an office building, a World War II Veterans Hospital, and a nightclub. Today it is one of Marriott’s upscale hotels with 291 rooms and 4 suites within its 14 floors.
The interior is modern chic and there are plenty of areas to sit and relax.
In the center of the ceiling of the lobby is a beautiful 30-foot-diameter stained glass dome.
The marble grand staircase exudes glamour and class and is an idyllic location for weddings.
There are touches throughout the hotel that are reminiscent of its earlier days, such as this phone that was located near the elevators on the 8th floor:
Guest Rooms
Guest room options include 1 king bed, 2 queen beds, 1 king bed with concierge access, 2 queen beds with concierge access, 1 king bed with a river view, an executive room with a king bed and a river view on a corner, and a one-bedroom junior suite on a corner with a river view.
My daughter and I were guests in room 817. The spacious room had 2 comfortable queen-sized beds and everything else that you would expect in a nice room.
Amenities include a mini fridge, in-room safe, and iron and ironing board. Free wifi is provided throughout the hotel for guests.
It had a writing desk from where I could sit and gaze at the Roberto Clemente Bridge and see fireworks after the Pirates won a game.
Bathroom Amenities
Bathrooms feature a marble vanity and are stocked with Aveda toiletries and plush towels.
Interesting Facts About Renaissance Pittsburgh
- The courtyard copper restoration is the largest copper restoration project on the East Coast since the Statute of Liberty was restored in 1986. Baking soda was used to clean it – in fact, it took 40,000 pounds to clean the copper cladding!
- Speaking of the Statue of Liberty – the granite on the exterior of the first three floors of the Renaissance was quarried from the same quarry that provided the granite for the base of the Statue of Liberty.
- Pittsburgh was the United States’ hub for the steel industry. Blackout curtains and devices were put into place during World War II – the Fulton Building (the Renaissance Hotel in its earlier days) rotunda dome was covered in a heavy rubber material to block out light. It was in place for almost 60 years until it was removed during renovation.
- Two mythical dragons made of cast aluminum are on the marquee.
